I really appreciate your insights and my family and I thank you for your candid words. I've received this article a dozen times and hope you don't mind that I've shared your comments with them to cease this e-mail from going around. The vast distribution and circulation of this alleged talk by Pres. Packer (aka someone's possible \"copious\" notes)reminds me a lot of the article purported to have been written by Sami Hanna, a linguist and expert on Middle Eastern languages. He was once a professor at the U (whether that's still the case now I am not sure). Regardless, many LDS members forwarded the article supposedly given by Elder Nelson regarding his association with Mr. Hanna with various intents, but the main focus being that of proving the veracity of the Book of Mormon. My neighbor, who knows Elder Nelson, called him regarding this article and he has requested that it NOT be passed along at all. With good reason! I believe that this sacred book stands on its own merits and only needs the Holy Ghost to prove that it is another testament of Jesus Christ. Call me an old softie, but I believe Moroni 10:2-6 is all I need. For whatever reason articles such as these are circulated, I believe, as you do, that they are not necessary and can actually do harm. I do not see that my faith has increased one iota by reading either of them. In fact, I wonder if in some way our right to discover gems and mysteries of the kingdom on our own wanes a bit by putting stock into them. What role does our own personal faith play in all of these articles? It's almost as if the circulators of such messages want us to rely on the arm of the flesh to prove that the church is true and not on God, the Savior, the Holy Ghost and Their great powers. The article going around now seems to me to be a scare tactic of some sort. Someone may be trying to stir up a panic. I wonder if the person who took these \"notes\" was trying to use the shock value on the members? Granted, there are some members who receive these and are touched. In a sincere effort to help others increase in faith and prepare for the impending \"disasters\" ahead, they pass these articles along. But again, we don't need them. We have the scriptures and our Ensigns and that is where we should be getting most of our information regarding the doctrines of the church. We know hard times are coming. In fact, being a history buff, it is apparent that hard times have always been in abundance. So, to sum things up I just want to say thanks again for reminding all of us to be very careful about what we read on the internet and in e-mails, especially where the church and its doctrine are concerned. Kudos to you, JG! Jeri Sue\u003cBR/\u003e\u003cBR/\u003ep.s. With your permission, I would like to send this to a few people including our missionary in Uruguay. I know how quickly such things can spread like wildfire in the mission field. I don't want him to forward the article on. My mission had lots of bizarre stuff go around about Mormon legends, articles from the Skousens, etc. It's just never a good idea to put trust in such things where the Church and the Lord are concerned."},"link":[{"rel":"edit","type":"application/atom+xml","href":"http://www.blogger.com/feeds/5078195935889186547/3873303535632943793/comments/default/2308873745764436811"},{"rel":"self","type":"application/atom+xml","href":"http://www.blogger.com/feeds/5078195935889186547/3873303535632943793/comments/default/2308873745764436811"},{"rel":"alternate","type":"text/html","href":"http://understandinglight.blogspot.com/2008/10/elder-packers-purported-talk.html?showComment\u003d1225686960000#c2308873745764436811","title":""}],"author":[{"name":{"$t":"Anonymous"},"email":{"$t":"noreply@blogger.com"}}]},{"id":{"$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5078195935889186547.post-8517734054029441181"},"published":{"$t":"2008-08-31T21:42:00.000-06:00"},"updated":{"$t":"2008-08-31T21:42:00.000-06:00"},"title":{"type":"text","$t":"What do you do to make sure you are allowing God t..."},"content":{"type":"html","$t":"What do you do to make sure you are allowing God to nourish you?\u003cBR/\u003e\u003cBR/\u003eI think getting spiritual nourishment has everything to do with keeping the Spirit in my life.
